Building the Website

We argued a lot at the beginning over the website: Robert wanted fewer pages with more information on the homepage and Maia insisted on a shorter scroll with more pages in addition to the homepage. Finally, we tabled that discussion and began to talk about what a website would actually need. We needed a homepage and a store page where people could actually buy our product. At the end of the meeting, we also decided that we wanted a blog where we could document our experiences as teens running a company. Eventually, the debate got settled by the fact that there was too much information to just put on the homepage and so much information could overwhelm and bore a site visitor, so we separated the About Us page from the homepage.

We also had extensive deliberations over the color scheme: Robert was adamant that we have bright, cheery yellows as our site colors and blobby text and layouts, and I thought it seemed unprofessional and wanted to stick to darker colors. Then Maia, our resident artiste, told me (nicely) that she didn't like any of our ideas and made everything blue and turquoise. This argument, like many aspects of the website, worked itself out when I switched to a better template halfway through that had a good color scheme: turquoise and blue.

When building the website, I used Wix and did not at all regret not sitting in front of lines of code for weeks on end to produce a lower-quality website. However, Wix is high-energy software, so the computer would start to freeze and shut down after every fifteen minutes or so. I had to work quickly and in chunks. If you're looking to build a simple site without a store, it's a better idea to use Google Sites. Wix, while better than coding, is laggy and has too many features that led me to three-hour customer service calls (very good customer service with a relatively fast 15-minute wait time).
